Paid Domains vs Free Subdomains

August 8th, 2011

Even though we offer free subdomains as a part of our hosting services, we don’t heavily advertise it. We highly recommend paying a little extra for a registered domain name because of how much more it benefits a website.

Using your own Domain Name vs a Free Subdomain

  • Branding / Credibility – when someone visits your website, it is much more professional looking if they see You.com rather than You.FreeDomainService.com. Your online presence says a lot about you as a person/company.
  • Search Engine Love – you are probably going to put a lot of time into marketing your website. If you use your own domain, then you benefit from incoming links, search engine placement, etc. If the site is on a free subdomain, then the free service benefits from it.
  • Traffic Stays With You – any traffic to your site is sent directly to you. If you have multiple areas of your website (ie. blog, store, etc), visitors can easily interact with your entire site.
  • You Own The Domain – as long as you keep the domain registered, you won’t loose it. If the free domain provider decided to stop using subdomains, the website would disappear.
  • Professional Email Addresses – instead of finding yet another free email address to use for your website, you can have one setup for the domain. You@You.com is much more professional looking than You@FreeEmailAddress.com. And, it is usually easier to remember!

Making the switch to a Paid Domain

A lot of people start out with a free subdomain and end up using it for years. Most of the time, this is because they are either unsure of how to change it or how it will effect their website. When done right, switching from a free subdomain to a registered domain name can be an easy, painless process and will provide a great benefit to the website. Here is the best way to do this:

  • Register a domain name. You can register one through us even if you don’t need hosting: Domain Registration
  • If you have a website hosted through a paid host, you will most likely have to contact them to get them to switch your account’s main domain. They should provide this service for you free of charge or for a very small fee.
  • If your webhost doesn’t provide that service for you, you can use your hosting account’s panel (usually cPanel) to add the domain as a parked domain and redirect it to your website.
  • If you use a free service such as blogger, you can redirect your blog to start using the new domain. Your free service provider should have instructions on how to do this.
  • When all else fails, contact us to see if we can be of any assistance.

Possible Issue – Online Store Cart: Temp Images Error

July 14th, 2011

A few people have seen an error recently in Online Store Cart. The error looks like this:

Warning: unlink(images/temp/.) [function.unlink]: Is a directory in /home/…/includes/application_top.php on line 598

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/…/includes/application_top.php:598) in /home/…/includes/functions/general.php on line 33

This isn’t happening to everyone, but for those of you who come across it, the solution is simple.

Open the aplication_top.php file found in the includes directory. If your store is in your main directory, the path should be: public_html>includes>application_top. Within that file, find this line:

unlink(TMP_DIR . $file);

Change that line to this:

if ( ! is_dir( TMP_DIR . $file) )
unlink(TMP_DIR . $file);

That’s it! Of course, if you have any issues with this or if you would rather have us do that for you, please let us know.

    Now Hiring: Web Designers

    May 6th, 2011

Sorry, but this position is full. We are leaving the form open for anyone who wants to leave their information on file for future openings.

WAHM Hosting is looking for new web designers to join our team!

Apply for the WAHM Hosting Design Team Now!

WAHM Hosting is a web host for small businesses and work at home moms. We build and host shopping cart websites, blogs, informational sites, traffic exchanges, directories, and more. While the rest of our team is focusing on server operations, script installations, website maintenance, seo services, etc, we need creative individuals to work on design elements for ourselves and our clients.

    Misnomers Debunked:

    • You do not need to be a WAHM to work for WAHM Hosting! While we are picky about who joins our team, it has nothing to do with sex, race, etc. and everything to do with what you can do!
    • You can apply even if you have a competing web design site. While you won’t be able to promote it to our clients, we do have something in place for you to incorporate your existing site with us.
    • Education isn’t a factor here. Don’t get us wrong, education is great! But, it isn’t a requirement for this job. If you have a degree in design, definitely let us know, but we really care more about the quality of your work than where you learned how to do it.

    Our Team Members Receive:

    • Admin level access to our Facebook & Twitter accounts.
    • Access to department support tickets.
    • A spot on our Meet The Team page as well as a profile page once you have done some work for us.
    • and more!

    Pay:
You will be paid per completed job. As our customers pay upfront, you won’t need to worry about getting paid for your work. We take care of that for you. We set our own prices for design work and each designer must be willing to work within our prices. Your level of payment will depend mostly on your skill level and what else you bring to your designs. We will give each designer a more accurate payment structure during the interview process.

    We must insist:

    • Designs created by you for our clients will give you credit, but will link to our website. For example: Designed by _____ at WAHM Hosting.
    • It goes without saying that all work must be your own. Using stock photography sites is fine as long as you follow their rules.
    • When potential clients come to you outside of WAHM Hosting, you do not have to go through us to sell them a design, but we must insist that you don’t refer them to another hosting company. You may, however, earn a percentage of the hosting fee for anyone you refer to WAHM Hosting.

What we are really looking for in a candidate:

    • Someone who is trustworthy.
    • Someone who is responsible and can effectively manage their time.
    • A team-player. We have accounts at Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, etc. Employees are not required to participate in any of these areas, but it would be nice to see our team interacting with our fans. This is a win-win situation for all team members since the more business you bring in, the more business you get.

What we mean by “Design Team”:
Our clients have a wide variety in taste and we try to match them up with designers who best suit their needs. We are looking to hire a few different individuals to meet these needs. When orders come in, clients are able to choose from a list of designers or we may provide one automatically for them based on availability. Needless to say, if a designer brings a customer to us, the designer automatically gets the design work for that client.

    Getting Personal

    April 5th, 2011

As a web host, I want to make sure that I reach my customers on a personal level as well as a business one. So, I’m going to open up a category of personal posts where I can share a bit more about myself.

When I first started out as a host, I really got to know most of my customers on a personal level. With few accounts at the time, it was easy to email back and forth about our personal lives. Of course, as the number of hosting accounts grew, there was less and less time to spend socializing.

I miss that. These days, hosting seems more mechanical. A lot of customers see their hosts as a large technical entity whom they go to when they need something. Of course, it’s great when you feel you can go to your host with website help, but the feeling of knowing your host isn’t there.

So, with all of that said, I am going to post a bit more about myself here in my blog. Feel free to use the blog’s comment feature to ask questions or introduce yourself.

My name is Renee Huggins and I am a work at home mom of 2 adorable boys. Christopher just turned 3 and Benjamin will be 5 later this month. My husband, Josh, is currently in construction management. He is a wonderful, supportive husband and an amazing father! My children constantly challenge me to be the best parent I can be. Of course, we’ll have to wait until they are a bit older to see how that worked out.

My sense of humor is a bit dry. I try not to joke around a lot in emails because when written, things can be taken the wrong way, but in person, I tend to use a bit of sarcasm to make a point. Just keep that in mind for my other posts here… if something sounds wrong, it’s probably meant to be a joke.

I absolutely love my job and I love meeting other moms online. Of course, I enjoy meeting everyone else that comes here for hosting, but I can really relate to the moms.

Free Webvice Friday – Got website questions? We answer them!

    March 18th, 2011

Since we are all about helping you succeed with your online business, we are always looking for ways to inform our customers on best website practices. So, we’ve decided to launch what we are calling Free Webvice Friday. Of course, we will still be able to give out free advice on the other days, but on Fridays, we will be doing it from our Facebook page.

We’ve installed a Chat application to our facebook page. We ask that you become a fan of our page by clicking on the ‘like’ button here: http://www.facebook.com/wahmhosting before coming to chat, but other than that, we have no requirements. This is not limited to our hosting customers either. Anyone is welcome to attend. We do ask that you not advertise in the chat though.

The Free Webvice Friday chats will usually be held from 10am-2pm EST. I know that’s right in the middle of the day, but it is when kids start getting out of school and it is harder for us to focus on answering you quickly when there are people screaming in our ears ;) . However, watch our facebook page for Events and Announcements. We may occasionally open the chat back up later in the afternoon or in the evenings if the kids are behaving.

So, come on over and join us as we discuss websites. Bring your questions or watch for advice! And, don’t forget to invite your friends!

The chat can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/wahmhosting?sk=app_100626246643948

You Need A Facebook Page – How To Get One & What To Do With It

    March 16th, 2011

If you have an online presence, whether it be a business or a personal blog, you should have a Facebook page to go along with it.

The Benefits of a Facebook Page

    1. Provide Interraction With Your Exsiting Clients: Facebook pages allow you to communicate directly with your fans to let them know a little bit more about your business. It is a great customer service tool as well. Customers can give you feedback on your products or services and, in return, you have the opportunity to reply back to their comments. Your Facebook page can create credibility with your existing customers and keep them updated with your latest announcements.
    2. Gain New Fans: Having a Facebook page will create a new fan base for your business. Potential customers can become a fan by “Liking” your page. They can ask you questions directly or watch your updates to see how you are different from your competitors. If you take a look at Facebook’s statistics, you’ll notice that there are about 250 million people using Facebook every day. That’s a lot of potential customers!
    3. Provide Credibility For Your Business: When people see that you have a public presence, such as a Facebook page, it gives your business more credibility. They can see how you handle your business and converce with your clients. They also know that there is a public forum available to them if they have any problems with your products/services.
    4. Create Traffic To Your Website: Yes, you can get traffic to your own site through your Facebook page. Your Facebook page should contain all of the information where you can be reached and your website address should be listed wherever possible. When you update your fans, include a link to your website or latest blog post, where applicable. Don’t overwhelm your fans with your link though, you don’t want to look like you are only trying to generate traffic through Facebook.

How To Setup a Facebook Page

If you don’t already have a personal Facebook account, set one up now. Some people setup Facebook accounts with their business name. However, that is not only against Facebook’s terms, I don’t recommend doing it. Not linking your business to your name may lead some visitors to think you have something to hide. If you are worried about tons of people finding your personal information, looking through your family photos, etc, don’t worry. Facebook’s privacy settings can help you control who sees what information.

To being setting up your Facebook page, follow this link: http://www.facebook.com/pages/browser.php#!/pages/create.php. If that didn’t take you directly there, click on the Facebook logo to get to the home page. From there, look for the Link that says Ads and Pages. That will take you to the Ads page and you’ll see another link for Pages. You should now be at the Page Manager (http://www.facebook.com/pages/manage). Click on the Create Page button and you should see this:

    facebook create page

Choose the category that best fits your business and fill in the details it asks for. Note: the brand or product category contains a Website option. Once you’ve completed that step, it will bring you to your new Facebook page. Of course, you’ll want to customize it.

    Getting Started

I suggest going down the list of things Facebook has suggested to do. If you get redirected away from this page, you can find it again under the Get Started link on the left side of the page.

Upload an image. This image will be shown on the left side of your page. This is usually a logo, but can be a larger image that contains more information. The size limit here is 540px x 180px.

    1. Invite your friends. Don’t hound them though. Invite them once and don’t pester them with continuous invites if they don’t join.
    2. Tell your fans. If you have a contact list of people that you keep in touch with already, you can import it so that Facebook can send them a message about your new page.
    3. Post status updates. Post something so that you can see what it looks like on your page’s wall. I usually go for something as simple as “Setting up my page.”
    4. Promote this page on your website. You can click on the Add Like Box button to get a few html codes that you can place on your website. Adding this will help your website visitors find your facebook page. There are a few different choices in what you can have display on your site. Go through the links under the Plugins menu to see them.
      Facebook Like Box Page
    5. Set up your mobile phone. You can update your Facebook page by email or text message through your cell phone.

    Further Customization

    1. Like your page: Don’t forget to like your own page. Click on the Like button at the top of the page.
    2. Edit the page’s information: Click on the Edit Info link below the page title and fill in the information about your page.
    3. Change your Thumbnail: Once you’ve gone through those recommended steps, head over to your page’s wall by clicking on the Wall link on the left side of the page. You should see the post that you made earlier. The picture next to the post is what will be displayed for all of your posts. This is a portion of the image you uploaded earlier. If you don’t like the way it shows on your wall, you can change it. Hover over the image and a link should appear that says Change Picture. When you click on that link, you are taken to a page similar to the one in the photo below. You can change the picture here by clicking on the Browse button. To change the thumbnail, click on the Edit Thumbnail link and drag the small image in the box around until you get it how you like it. This is a square image, so if you don’t get the results you like, try using an image that has your desired thumbnail inside a square portion of the image.
      Edit Facebook Thumbnail
    4. Get a Vanity Facebook URL: When you edited your page’s information, you may have noticed the line that says, “Username: Your page needs at least 25 fans to have a username.” Once you get 25 fans, I highly recommend going back into the page information area and giving yourself a vanity URL. Personally, I would try to get 25 fans as soon as I could just so that I could get the vanity name. This will take your page’s URL from: http://www.facebook.com/pages/your-business/123456789012345 to http://www.facebook.com/yourbusiness. A vanity URL is not only easy to remember, but it will give your page better rankings in the search engines.
    5. Use Apps: There are tons of apps available for your Facebook page. They expand the possibilities of uses for your page. For example, I would recommend creating custom pages for your visitors. You can make a special landing page to tell the visitor what you are all about. You can also connect your blog feed directly to your page. I’m sure I’ll do some posting later on the ones I recommend, but I want to keep this specific article limited to what should be done right away to get things up and running.

Getting People To Like Your Page

Ok, so you’ve built your page up to the point where you are ready to interract. You need people to like the page for that to happen. You’ve already sent out a request for all of your friends to like the page, right? If they are really good friends, they may even suggest the page to their friends as well. However, some ways to get fans are:

    1. Send requests. You can suggest the page to all of your friends. Again, don’t suggest it to the same person more than once as they may not want to join. Some people recommend asking your friends to suggest it to their friends as well, but you should use your own disgression about whether or not you want to do that.
    2. Content. Like everything else online, your fans will most likely come after you have begun posting quality content. Just make sure you post often with topics related to your business.
    3. Sharing. Everytime you post a link or a picture, share it on your personal profile as well. You will notice that other people may share your posts on their walls as well. If they do, you may get a few more likers out of it. You could even ask your fans to share your posts.
    4. Website links. Put a link or a like box on your website.
    5. Exchange. Find other pages that you like or that may be relevant to yours. Post a little hello on their page and mention your own. To mention a page, use the @ symbol and then the page name. For example, I use this when I like a page: “Hello! Liking you from @WAHM Hosting. Come by and say hi anytime!” Of course, try to make sure this is welcome before you do it. I like to scroll down the page a bit and see how they interract with their fans.
    6. Link Everywhere. Put your page link anywhere you can. Of course, I recommend doing this after you have your vanity URL. Put the link in email signatures, business cards, forum posts (if allowed), etc. Basically, anywhere you can stick your link, do it.
    7. Ask Us. If you need an extra fan, head on over to ours: WAHM Hosting Facebook Page and leave us a message letting us know you need a fan. We’re more than happy to help!

Of course, there are tons of ways to get people to like your page, but this should help you get started.

    Additional Tips For Your Page

    • Provide other content than just what you are selling. Let the visitor get to know about you as well as your product. You’ll see that the more personal you get, the more people will want to interact with you.
    • Keep your fans updated. Whenever you are doing something new with your website, announce it on your facebook page. Updating often will keep fans interested, but don’t overdo it.
    • Encourage fans to post on your page and participate in discussions.

Redirect your Non-WWW website address to WWW (or vice-versa) Permanently

    March 11th, 2011

An important step for website owners is to setup a permanent (or 301) redirect between your www and you non-www website address. Among other reasons why you should do this is because it it matters to the search engines.

That’s right, this is yet another step towards becoming search engine friendly. You see, search engines don’t like to see duplicate content. When they do, they mark your website as having duplicate content and the consequences for you are not good. When your website gets indexed as www.you and then indexed again when it is found without the www, search engines see that as two different sites. All of a sudden, you are listed as having duplicate content.

For example, http://wahmhosting.com is seen differently by the search engines than http://www.wahmhosting.com. So, what I would need to do is to tell anyone (including search engines) visiting one of those domains to go to the other domain. The way around this is simple. You need to add a 301 redirect to your .htaccess file.

It is up to you whether or not you want to use the www or the non-www url. There hasn’t been any evidence supporting one being any better than the other. It is a personal choice.

To redirect a non-www url to www, add this to your .htaccess file:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain\.com
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

To redirect a www url to a non-www, add this to your .htaccess file:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.yourdomain\.com$ [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*) http://yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Of course, replace yourdomain.com with your website domain. Check that you have done it right by visiting your website with both the www and without it. They should both redirect you to the one you want.
